Athenry 1 Mervue United 4
Mervue opened the season with an impressive win away to Athenry. They hit the front on 20 mins when a through ball from the back from Riain O’Connor found Mark O’Halloran, who managed to beat two players and fired in a great shot from outside the box that went in off the post. The second followed minutes later when Aaron Neary played Adam Healy in, and he kept a cool head and fired past TJ Forde in goal to put Mervue 2 up at half time.
Athenry made two changes at HT and made a few positional changes which helped them get more of a foothold in the game in the second half and with 70 mins on the clock they pulled one back, when a cross from the left wasn’t dealt with and Cole Connolly reacted quickly to force the ball into the net.
This set back was short lived when a pass down the right from Luke O’Gorman, found Lewis Waweru, who played a great ball down behind the left back for Kody McCann to chase onto and he delivered the perfect cross for the inrushing Aaron Neary to fire home to make it 3-1. Then on 85mins a long ball from Dara McGrath was misjudged by the Athenry defender and the ball broke for Mark O’Halloran, who carried it from outside the box and slipped it past the Athenry keeper to seal the 3 pts for Mervue and cap of a great win for this young side.
Next up for Mervue will see them take on Oranmore on Thursday night at 8pm in Fahys Field.
